Graphy solved a lot of different graphing problems, but Google wasn't ranking them for keywords related to those problems because Graphy did not have a page that signalled to Google that it would satisfy searchers of those problems. Their home page did a good job explaining Graphy in a broad sense and what it could do, but Google wouldn't rank a broadly-focused page for keywords that indicated specific intent.
Our strategy therefore was to research, cluster, and prioritize all the different ways people search on Google for how to make graphs then build pages that showcase Graphy as a solution to each cluster of keywords so Google would find the page highly relevant and rank it highly.
Besides writing and optimizing lots of new pages, we also ensured Graphy had a solid technical SEO foundation so Google could easily crawl and index all their pages without problems and continued building new backlinks to improve Graphy's authority in the eyes of Google.
What about getting more mentions from answer engines? Luckily, answer engines search Google too. So when Graphy does better on Google, they get cited more in the answers generated from answer engines. Good AEO follows from good SEO.
